In Bed with Leroy | The Lovebots

The Lovebots

Dear Readers,
Every Thursday, for Vancouver Fashion Week, yours truly explores every dancehall, every gallery opening, every dive bar to look for the edgiests and most inspiring artists out there that don’t dream of icon-dom; they simply are.

The show is called “In Bed With Leroy”, and this week, I dive into the concrete recesses of a building we like to call CBC.

The CBC TV/Radio building downtown holds many a talent from the hosts on hilarious programs like “The Debaters” to TV anchors such as a man Vancouver has dubbed “Ian Handsome-Man-Thing”.

But this time around, as I struted into the CBC 700 Building, I knew I was only here for one thing: The OneLove 2012 Show.

Organized by the talented Tahia Ahmed and a collective of staff and volunteers, this tremendously creative and genius womyn has put together other events in our humble home of Vancouver like Artquake for example.

What Ahmed does is she creates a safe, smart and entertaining platform for youth of all shapes, sizes, sexualities, backgrounds and beliefs to come together and present their artistic disciplines on a professional stage.

The OneLove 2012 Show was even more than this.

Walking in the entrance, a la first class as always, I noticed not only is there fantastic paintings, fashion couture pieces and musician merch on display; yours truly was performing, and there in front of me sat a Sony wireless headset microphone, every aspiring pop star’s wet dream come to life.

I sat with my favourite girls in the world, my Lovebots, and we begin a small prayer we always do before we go on stage. We had to follow tough local acts like the Asian Alicia Keys, Kim Possible, thrash-metal band, Technical Damage, and a rap-duo named Sic Vicious, which already proved to me tonight was going to be a night of one of the most eclectic and diverese rock rosters.

After a quick award ceremony as well, where Tahia wanted to honour youth in our community dedicated to create positive change, the devilishly handsome tech man calls my name through my headset.

So I straightened up my weave, pulled up my pants, and got ready to perform. After all, this was for Vancouver Fashion Week.

With love and style, Leroy
