A Bright Future

As we peek into the Spring/Summer 2012 season and its color palette, it seems that one breakout trend from 2011 is here to stay. While muted grays, midnight blacks, and soft whites of an industrial character were showcased on many runways around the world, several collections contained electric pops of much-needed color in one particular piece, the trouser. Adding life to the neutral “Metropolis” inspired pieces, the bright pant is reaching its grasp into our foreseeable fashion future.

Due to its immense popularity amongst both men and women, designers have been running with the creative possibilities the rainbow affords. Both MaxMara and Jil Sander, for example, played with a crayon-box assortment of colors in their 2011 seasons; and this trend has inevitably walked off the runway, onto the streets.

As seen in the S/S 2012 collections of designers such as Mugler and Derek Lam, the colored trouser can be adjusted to one’s own frequency of comfort. In sync with the futurism of the season, Mugler took an all-or-nothing approach to color with the head to toe neon mint green. Explaining this astounding saturation of color, Fashion Director Nicola Formichetti stated that “green represented the blood of the digital era – if this technology has a kind of color, for me, it is neon green.” In contrast to the drastic electricity of Mugler’s genius, Derek Lam successfully utilized the effect of color blocking with primary hues, the favorite being a shocking cobalt blue. Whether you intend to exude Mugler’s postmodern courage, or Derek Lam’s polish and elegance, the rainbow-bright pant is ready to make the statement.
